Carla

Hot off the easel, this figure drawing in charcoal really captures the elegance and attitude of the pose. I have drawn Carla, the model, many times before, but this time the portrait and sense of personality really comes through (better than in my previous drawings) which is really pleasing.

The drawing got off to a very quick start and didn't suffer from too many headaches in terms of getting the proportions and body-type working. That left plenty of time to think about the light impression and the overall feel of the piece. I spent quite some time designing the background as I wanted something atmospheric, which emphasised the twist of the pose and created additional interest.
